About

What happens when old time radio dramas clash with a modern day 20-something?  No technology, no Starbucks, and no one is PC!  Will Madison survive?  Follow along as she teams up with radio icons like Sherlock Holmes, Marshal Matt Dillon and Superman. Original radio scripts adapted lovingly to give a funny and modern look at the way things were and the way things are today. It’s as if the MST3K/Riff Trax guys were in the movies they riff. All episodes are stand-alone. Start at the beginning, or if you see a title you like, jump in anywhere!

what is

Madison on the Air is a scripted comedy podcast that follows the 20-something makeup blogger, Madison Standish, who has been zapped from modern day into old time radio dramas (through some “freaky-deaky science-stuff”… we don’t exactly know how).  With a deep love of the genre, Chrisi Talyn Saje adapts original radio drama scripts from the 1930s-1950s to include the fun-loving, mocha latte drinking, guy crazy, woke culture devotee Madison.  She may be partnered up with Sherlock Holmes, or Marshal Matt Dillon, donning the tights of Batman’s Boy Wonder, fighting Martians or joining other famous radio icons on their adventures.  Each episode features a different radio show.  All in fun, Madison serves to highlight the way we were and the way we are today, bringing the lost art form of scripted radio series to modern audiences. No need to know anything about old time radio to appreciate Madison’s adventures.
Started as a way to flex her creative muscles during the 2020 lockdown, Chrisi Talyn Saje has put her quarantined friends to work. Through the magic of modern technology, all of the cast records their roles remotely and Chrisi (along with her audio engineering/music composing husband, Jeremy) brings them together into the roughly 30 minute shows.  And while the Sajes are located in Los Angeles, the cast includes the voice talents of actors all across the U.S. and abroad.
Madison on the Air is free to listen to and is supported by a Madison Membership on Patreon or a one-time donation via Ko-fi.

If you like old time radio dramas, everything from Dragnet to The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes to the kiddie shows like The Lone Ranger, you should like Madison on the Air. The performances are genuine.  I love these shows way too much to ridicule or make fun of them.  But you absolutely do NOT have to be familiar with old time radio programs to like our little comedy!  By sending Madison along for the ride through these mid-20th Century series, she provides a modern commentary as the stories unfold. Imagine if MST3K could actually interact with the characters in the films they feature!  She brings a lighthearted and fun sitcom-style comedy to the otherwise serious dramas, ever self-referencing, and pointing out the differences between modern day and the past.
What about kids? This is adult satire and really not geared towards children.  While the language is TV level mild (even from Madison), most of the radio dramas deal with hard-nosed detectives, murder and crime.  (Even Superman is rather dark by today’s standards) And Madison doesn’t hold back on the sex or recreational drinking/drug references (albeit she always leaves the audience to fill in the lurid details)  I suggest giving an episode a listen and determining for yourself if your kids might enjoy it.  I hope they would!

Bonus Features

Years One and Two featured “Madison’s Mad Facts” as companion pieces to each episode. They are short little history lessons about “what life was really like during these old timey radio shows.” Starting August 2024, the Mad Facts are back as a bonus for subscribing to be a Madison Member on Patreon.
In addition to Mad Facts, we’ve also done bonus episodes of “The Shadow”, “The Jack Benny Show”, an interview with working actors in LA looking at the history of Asian-Americans in Hollywood following our “The Green Hornet” episode, and interviews with Chrisi and the guys at Science Fiction Remmant.

About Chrisi

In a job interview (for a job she didn’t get) Chrisi was told her resume was “eclectic.”  And ya know what?  That’s just fine by her.  Because her wide variety of life and work experiences are all getting a workout for Madison on the Air.  Chrisi started training in comedy improv at age 14 (we’ll let you guess just how many years ago that was). A native Chicagoan, the center of her comedy universe began at Second City.  But she also obtained a college degree in theater performance just to round out that comedy stuff.
Chrisi likes to say she’s held every “assistant” job Hollywood has to offer including writers’ rooms, production, casting, at a talent agency, and in development.  She went back to get her Masters from UCLA in Film and TV Producing with a specialization in television writing and digital media. She’s produced her own works at theaters around Chicago and LA, and has taught, coached and performed improv across the U.S.
Chrisi has professionally built web pages, created content, and run social media accounts for the beauty industry, slaved in tech support for scriptwriting software, and worked as a background artist (an extra in TV and film) for eight years where she’s gotten some pretty awesome Hollywood stories. Oh, and she’s been a professional dog trainer since 2001, working in the pet care industry just as long.  “Eclectic?”  Pfft.

Jeremy

So it’s a wife-husband endeavor, but don’t think for a moment any of this could be done without Jeremy.  A trained singer and musician originally from New Jersey, Jeremy has appeared in countless musicals (including “Jesus Christ Superstar, Gospel” in Atlanta, attended by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice) has sung professionally on albums, fronted several bands, fronts a night with Phil Collins and Genesis for symphony orchestras, has performed as a professional puppeteer and plays a mean sax.
Jeremy is the audio whiz behind Madison on the Air. He also is the reason we aren’t getting sued for copyright infringement of the music, which he adapts and transforms from the original scores of the old time radio shows.  He lends a voice to every episode (and Chrisi fulfilled his childhood dreams of becoming Batman).  You might also recognize his voice in the Madison on the Air Theme Song which he wrote and performed.
